Countertops
We willl soon be restoring a house and would like to hear about other's choices of countertop material. It will be redone in Mexican, country style. There is a place in Mazatlan that uses concrete to make a faux stone that is used for counters, sinks, outdoor tables, benches, etc that we really like but that is there. Does anyone know of a similar product here or in GDL?
We know some people that used regular poured concrete and then stained after pouring and it wasn't so great.
I would think the color would have to be added before pouring but then there is the problem of cooking stains to be dealt with somehow.
Any input appreciated!

Re: Countertops
I have seen some really nice tiled countertops if you don't mind having the grout lines.

We used talavera in our other place and found the tiles too soft (wore off) and the boquilla was white and a real PITA to care for. If we were to use tiles again they would have to be ceramic and darker grout.

Agreed. I have blue talavera with white grout in my kitchen now.

We had the cement type installed in our casita, but unfortunately, it doesn't look so good. The color was mixed in, but all manner of messy patches emerged after a while. It was the contractor's first try at it, and I will say it's an easy care way to go.

Concrete will crack after a while. Not something I would want in my kitchen. I like solid-surface material like Corian. There are lots of alterntive solid countertops that imitate wood and stone. Corians has no seams, you can cut on it and sand out gouges. It's my personal favorite. http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/7779702/list/Your-Guide-to-15-Popular-Kitchen-Countertop-Materials/

This is a quartz composite; food safe and comes in a variety of colors & styles (in GDL);

Corian is made by Dupont and they are in MX also

There are Corian look-alikes that are much cheaper than the original. The caesarstone is really different. Granite has been so overused that it's boring.

Mine were made in place with cement and white cement on top. Granit piece embedded. Took lots of grinding and a rather toxic sealer. Of course, the Mexicans wouldn't wear to respirator mask I bought.
Much better than grout lines

We did a nice substitute for black granite in the big rental kitchen. We used 2 foot by 2 foot matte finish black floor tiles and black grout. We did a over hang 2 inches on front and a 4 inch backsplash. Looks great and was very inexpensive.
