Surf fishing at Cuyutlán (Near Manzanillo). Suggestions/advice?

In a couple of weeks the wife and I are going for our 1st "beach fix" after moving to Ajijic 8 months ago.  We're renting a small beach house in Cuyutlán, where, if I'm lucky, I might get a couple of early mornings fishing in the the surf - nothing too serious.

I'm not really a sea fisherman but I do have a surf rod and reel.  While vacationing in Florida and the Carolina's, years ago, I used to bait a hook with a strip of squid flesh and just toss that out with a large lead weight to catch sting rays and sand sharks.  I was going to do the same at Cuyutlán.  Anyone have any other ideas, suggestions or techniques I might try?

I'd be casting for rooster fish. With miles long sandy beaches, look for bait fish jumping and/or birds diving. Use a silver/chrome lure in the 4 to 6" size. Cast out as far as you can and speed reel the lure in. (Be sure to set the drag before your first cast.) Using cut bait you might catch a ray, a sand shark or puffer but you would not want to eat them.

Your best bet would be to rent a ponga w/captain and they supply all the gear you need for dorado, yellowfin tuna, sailfish etc. 500 pesos per hour is the going rate. Good luck.

Thanks sparks. I haven't been to Cuyutlan but Google shows miles of sandy beaches which are perfect for Roosterfish. I have been fishing out of Manzanillo on pongas and that's a short ride north for some great fishing.

Might take you up on looking at a few lures at your place.  See you at the lake Thursday morning.  After talking at the fishing meeting last Monday a few guys might turn up for a little carp fishing...!!!

Bring a set of long needle nose pliers and also a wire cutter. You can get the fancy stainless steel ones, but the basics well sprayed with WD-40 will get you through. The pliers are used to remove hooks or lures from puffer fish and needle fish - they are a trash fish but can ruin your day pretty fast if you get spiked. The wire cutters are to cut and remove hooks if you accidently hook someone else or yourself. My nephew in Haida Gwai recently hooked his eyeball - ouch!

I have needle nose fishing pliers but never thought of taking wire cutters!  The very first stingray I caught on the beach, just a small one, whipped it's tail around as I went to grab it and sent the spine on top of it's tail straight through my little finger - blood everywhere!  Carried long pliers and a stick every since!

Sounds like the roosterfish will be close inshore this time of year and a 20 pounder would not be rare from the beach.  Anything would be fun to catch so I'll be taking a light rod to catch "bait" fish if nothing else is biting...

The rooster fish are one of the most prized, and hard to catch game fish in the world. They are only catch and release, at least that is the practice, maybe not the law. The surf fishing blog from Cabos Corrientes says the best time is August/September, after the summer rains swell the rivers. Very hot and high humidity. Adventure fishing, not recreation fishing. He has not updated his blog for some time - if I am correct, the last time he visited he was robbed at gunpoint, taking his ATV and gear. Maybe it was someone else on this board.
