Anyone noticed?
Long story short: 60 yr. old friend stays with us for 3 months. Arrives with astronomical diabetes numbers, two full loads of insulin injected, one in a.m, other in p.m.. Upon departure only injecting 1/4 load in the p.m. with numbers way down. Back in the states now and his numbers are back up as is his injection regimen. Our suspicion is the food, he didn't eat packaged or processed food here. Same thing with my cholesterol, no more meds and I was taking a bunch. Anyone else noticing changes like this? I'm sure we're not the exceptions.

Ask him what his A1C is now.

Re: Anyone noticed?
When I got to Ajijic in September "09, I was 5"10" and 200 lbs. Now, without really trying, I'm still 5'10, but only 175 lbs. My blood pressure and cholesterol were astronomical, and my stress unmanageable when I retired from law enforcement in Los Angeles. I haven't checked any of it since I got here, but will soon and expect to find improvement. I think it's the Dos X's -- :affraid:

Re: Anyone noticed?
I arrived here five years ago. I was 5 foot eleven then. Think I am now five ten and have had noticeable shrinkage in other areas, as well. Stop laughing. Ballooned up to 239 within six months as I was gobbling up everything in sight for my first six momths here. Decided to shape up and Dr Leon, cut my cholesterol and blood pressure meds. I argued with him, but did as I was told. I am now 205 and five feet nine. Kidding. But I have lost over 35 pounds and feel better than ever. The doctors in Mexico are head and shoulders above those in the States. They actually take the time to listen to you and do not pontificate. Zoey

Most people I talk too are healthier since they have moved here. Fresh food, no preservatives, cobblestones give you better balance skills and the men I talk to don't need Viagra anylonger! It's the fountain of youth.
I also agree about the doctors. All the prescriptions they push in the 'old country' are for pharmaceutical company profits. It's been an eye opener and I was in the healthcare biz. Couldn't have told me that before.

Great post. Most people who are not here do not believe it. I am now a believer. Everything you said is true and I have cut down on my meds since living here. No fast foods is a big help in us staying healthy, although I have to do a Burger King run every couple of months to GDL. Hey, a lot better than every couple of days in the States Plus, the time that physicians will spend with you and listen to you and care about you here is amazing. I turn 66 tomorrow. Had health insurance in the States. Went in when I was 50 to have my first colonoscopy. Pre cancerous polyps were snipped, but now I had to have this done every five years. Called for an appointment just before I moved to Mexico. Wanted to make an appointment for another colonoscopy. No, since it had been five years, my gastroenterologist, who had now moved and owned his own brand new five story building in an upper class community, said I needed to come in for an office visit first. I made the appointment, went in and his hand never left the doorknob of the room I was in. NO exam, did not touch me, just looked at my records and said I needed to schedule a colonoscopy, which is what I called for in the first place. Charge for this three minute visit to Blue Cross. 250 dollars. I was outraged. The worst part is they paid it. Zoey

Unfortunately, the system in the states that has resulted in group practices to save money has also resulted in those becoming "profit centers"; meaning each patient that walks in had better produce some money for the practice. Been there and had that done.....almost. Got a second opinion on an expensive orthopedic procedure and discovered it was unnecessary. Simple exercises and different footwear did the job. Made me wonder...but not for long.
Things are different around here. Thank hevvins.

I know! I came from a rural area, sad to say and don't always like to admit it, but it was a 3rd world country compared to here. We always say this is definately a step up.
Took 4 months to get an appt at a dermatologist, so I saw one here. Took one day and the fee was 200 pesos. Way better than $200 USD.

Four and a half years ago, I had medical procedures done in Florida, while I was still covered by Blue Cross/ Blue shield, which I no longer am. When the receptionist found out that I lived in Mexico, she demanded full payment up front. I refused and demanded that she call Blue Cross, as I knew I was covered for this procedure. Took me a couple of hours of standing there, and arguing with her, but she finally called when she realized that I was not going to give her one cent. I was fully coivered and she was angry as hell. I love Mexico. Zoey

I agree with you, once again. Had full covereage in MIchigan, or so I thought. Went to a dermatologist who gave me two or three shots of liquid nitrogen and got a bill for 75 dollars, after my insurance company paid their share. In Ajijic, there is an absolutely amazing clinic, run by three incredible female dermatologists and it has never cost me over 500 pesos, with one exeption. They took a biopsy and sent it into the lab and it was non-malignant and I had to pay the outrageous some of 850 pesos total for everything, Dermika, in Ajijic. These three women are fantastic. Zoey

That's good to know. I think I have one of those skin cancers on my arm but will wait until I get there. Even with insurance I don't want to know what it would cost here to get it done. Medical care is so pricey here that the insurance company wants us to go to Puerto Rico for most things & they pay half the plane fare. Multiply your stateside costs times 3 & you get the idea.

One thing I noticed when I was there was really good for me & that's that my appetite decreased a lot. I quit smoking 5 years ago & packed on too much weight after being very thin so I hope that the appetite loss/cutback continues when I return. The food was great but I just didn't eat as much.

Si, that's the same one I went to and was very impressed. So was my husband who is a retired physician.
