Three of our four apartments have recently be rented long term by folks who are retiring here. As to moving back I'd say health issues would be #1.

If it weren't so hot and humid at the beaches, I'd be there instead.  Always lived on the coast NOB.

The question was not about Lakeside in particular, but about leaving Mexico after
moving from NOB.

Broaden the topic. Why not include people that leave Lakeside for other areas of Mexico? I am sure there are others like me.

For sure there is. I know more people that have left here for other parts of Mexico or other exotic locals than have headed back to where they came from. All of them have been single people (young or young spirited) bored with The Lake Chapala scene and seeking other adventures. None of them were here longer than a year (except for you Playaboy).

I think the expats in Chapala, Joco, Ixtlahuacan, and San Juan Cosala tend to stick more. Ajijic tends to be the teflon crowd. Not good or bad, just a different crowd migrates there for different reasons.

Quite a few expats hit lakeside around 2005 for real estate speculative reasons, lost their shirt and now seem to trash talk their experience here. I don´t miss them.

The "Ajijic crowd", also seems to complain more about cohetes, loud music, barking dogs, etc., etc,. than the other localities. Seems like they expect it to be more like where they came from.......and in some ways it is. LOL

I think Ajijic has far more expats than the other towns. Maybe more than all the other towns combined? Given those stats I would think the percentage's of people who leave are about the same albeit people living in Joco or Ixthul or the southside are probably better suited to immerse into the culture.

I would also wager that Ajijic expats tend to have more $$ so leaving isn't as big of an issue.

We all know of one outstanding example of that !  Our fan of la Bodega.

Now, about the "Ajijic crowd", whoever they are.  When did that location get homogenized?  Living there, I see the various collections:  the LCS hovering-in-the patio group, the "ladies who lunch" group (most of whom live elsewhere) at the Ajijic restaurants, the "old guys group" at Donas and miscellaneous expats who like to be able to walk on the Malecon and/or take advantage of some economic opportunities which don't exist up or down the road.

Here's a sweet one:
Once a year, the big art club (ASA) has a Lakeside-wide "Open Studios" event, and guess where ALL the artists and craftspeople want to park themselves for the occasion, get themselves "hosted" and take advantage of the hundreds of visitors/buyers?  Go on, guess where?  In their own digs out in San Antonio or Riberas?  Not, even though the catalog contains a map listing all the locations in the area?
So, make all the assumptions you want re people who happen to have chosen Ajijic as home.  But take a little time to think about it before doing so.

I think they discovered they weren't as hard of hearing as they thought they were. Americans tend to like things much quieter.

If Gerson Therapy opened a clinic here, everyone would live into their 100's and no one would ever leave for medical. hehe This would not only be known for the best climate but the fountain of youth. Unless for a random act.

Unless they are in restaurants and then they are the noisiest people I have ever experienced.

We didn't plan on leaving Lakeside......diagnosis of the "BIG C" kind of forced the issue.  Medicare combined with Blue Cross supplemental costs $300.00 USD with ZERO deductible  and Zero copays, and hospital/Oncologist is only 6 miles away.

We are optimistic that we are going to beat this sucker, and return to Lakeside May thru September Thumbs up annually.

Why do people leave?
Who cares if some malcontents leave?  Medical reasons, understandable, missing family, understandable.
Maybe they should have a verifiable excuse to get out.
If it is such a big problem, maybe they should have their passports confiscated like they do in some Arab countries, or get Nordstom's to open a store.
Much ado about nothing, water will seek it's own level.

Nobody will miss the malcontents.

When I was looking for a house four years ago, I was told by a guy on the street that if I did move here, I would have to run someone out so I could take the empty spot.

I would also wager that Ajijic expats tend to have more $$ so leaving isn't as big of an issue. Bobby sounds a bit like Donald Trump! why DO people leave? - Page 2 477249

Maybe so, but the health, family, and culture adaptation issues are the same for the top income group as well as the bottom.

Call it what you will Jimmy however tis the truth. Hence the reason that most things (including RE) are more expensive in Ajijic.

You and the Trumpster will make a better team........jaja.

A more positive question would be why do people choose to live full-time in Mexico. A couple of years ago there was an article published in Mexperience which briefly said: "The profile of foreigners living in Mexico has changed since the 60’s and 70’s. Back then, most expats living here were long-term residents; today, most foreign expatriates arrive in Mexico and leave again within about three years. Changing lifestyles, fixed-schedule work placements, and a constant emergence of new opportunities brought about through technology and globalization are transforming the way many people living outside of their home country engage with the opportunities presented to them." Lets face it folks, anyone that's been here for a few years has experienced the tremendous increase in housing and traffic. I can't lay my hands on the information to validate but I do believe more US citizens have renounced their citizenship to the US than anytime in history while more and more expats are taking out their Mexican citizenship. It would be interesting to know what they wrote as to why they wanted to acquire Mexican Citizenship.

Gee, it's nice to learn that I must be richer than the folks up on the hill in Las Salvias, Rancho del Oro, Racquet CluB, or the gated place John in Ajijic used to live in !!!  I know it must be true, since I live in the VILLAGE.

Some people will believe ANYTHING. I'll have to let my Mexican neighbor know how rich he is, too.
